Distortion alert !! 'The Train Kept A Rollin' cuts in tormented with lots of bass and other unpleasant noises. This is the first recorded Led Zeppelin concert, opening for Vanilla Fudge. The sound gets better when 'I Can't Quit You' starts and you can hear Robert Plant with his amazing voice. This is the voice that Jimmy Page heard visiting a Hobbstweedle concert in Birmingham in the
summer of 1968 and decided to get this singer into his new band.

Also the other rather unknown at that time, John Bonham, is quite remarkable here. John Paul Jones, the seasoned studio musician/arranger is again very present during 'As Long As I Have You'. The first verse of 'Dazed & Confused' is vocally a perfect clone of Jack Holmes version (is it still available
on cd ? I have it on a legal Japanese cd called 'Zeppelin Classics' on the P-Vine label).

Was Vanilla Fudge already getting nervous following this opening act ? Quite a bit, i think. Jimmy sitting on a stool with the Dan Electro playing 'White Summer' made quite an impression. There is some strange background sound in the quiet bits, seems like some effect/echo unit is constantly making noise. The audience is very polite towards this unknown group.

Robert lets loose the first serious scream during the intro for 'How Many More (Times) Years'. It's strange that 'Pat's Delight' comes after 'How Many More Times'. Maybe 'Communication Breakdown' was played as an encore, otherwise this makes no sense, closing with a drum solo. Or were they already so confident in the drumming abilities of John Henry Bonham ?

Very good audience recording with all the instruments clearly coming through.
Great version of 'The Train Kept A Rollin' with equally good solo from Jimmy, a bit short. Plant is the star in the beginning of 'I Can't Quit You' with his unique powerful high voice. After the solo he makes the microphone shake with his powerful outbursts.

'As Long As I Have You' follows with Plant again going to the limit. For a band that was first playing together a few months ago the playing is incredible, already improvising and playing jams like they know each other for years. After the fast passage Bonzo seems to play the introduction to 'Good Times, Bad Times'. There's a cut and suddenly we're at the end of the song with Robert letting loose a scream of airraid siren proportions.

'Dazed & Confused' follows, it's kinda strange that nobody recognises any songs because the first album was already or about to be released. After another cut we arrive neatly into the bow solo which seems to be a funny spectacle (if we hear some reactions from the audience). Bonzo and Jones are playing along for a good part with Jimmy on his solo spot. During the fast solo Page is playing so furious that it's a wonder everybody keeps up with him. Jimmy inserts a almost folky part to the final section.

If everybody survived the last song, 'How Many More Times' must elimenate the last few standing. 'Who are you ?' is almost as good as the 'oooh my ears man' from Adelaide 1972 and ranks very high in my audience remarks Top Ten. Page builds up the tension nicely with his playing before Robert joins in to play along. After another cut there a dreamy 'San Francisco' sequence before another bow solo. The 'little Robert Anthony wants to play' lyrics are not used here, but these also sound fine. After 'The Hunter' there seems to be a train onstage and this evolves in a kind of intercourse between the voice and guitar. The
return of the main theme has a very bluesy feeling over it.

After a few confusing cuts it's time for a serious guitar lesson. The beginning of 'White Summer' sounds a bit shy. It's not so long either and i doubt 'Black Mountain Side' is included at all. 'Killing Floor' is next on the setlist. Plant really tries to destroy his and the taper's microphone. It almost sounds like a soundeffect or something.

'You Shook Me' is introduced as 'Muddy Waters Twist'. Very long version where Jimmy solos endlessly. Then it's time for Bonzo' pre 'Moby Dick' solo. Nothing remarkable here, it's a good version. 'Babe I'm Gonna Leave You' is outstanding with those very nice light/heavy accents.

A funky interlude is used for the start of 'Communication Breakdown'. It's a bit slowly played like they wasted all their energy already. 'For Your Love' is the famous Yardbirds song.

Incredibly good sounding tape, only lacking a bit bass. During the opening salvos it seems that they were still making up their minds if starting with 'The Train Kept A Rollin' or 'Communication Breakdown'.

'I Can't Quit You' follows with no hesitation and even a bit of audience reaction. Plant is in fine voice, it would get worser during this tour. The interaction between Page and Plant is already working well.

Jimmy tries a new opening to 'As Long As I Have You'. One of the best recorded with a great medley including 'I Just Wanna Make Love To You'. Everything works out so great here, the perfect band still trying to proof something instead of going through the motions.

'You Shook Me' and 'Communication Breakdown' finish a great show. Especially the latter one is very good, with incredible solos from Page who seems a bit Hendrix influenced during this show. Not sure if they were the headliner, seems a bit short with 37 minutes.

15/03/1969 pop club,brondby;
This tape sounds a bit inferior compared to the former one, however the lower frequencies are better audible here.

Plant still in very good voice despite two performances on one day. Same pattern of songs performed here, but this tape is incomplete. Plant mentions that Led Zeppelin I is released in Denmark and dedicates 'Dazed & Confused' to one of his favourite hobbies.

Shame that not the whole concert is available. The Empress Valley booklet contains a great article and photographs of these shows.

It's nice to have just the music, but with the visuals added it get's a lot more exciting. Page with the psychedelic Telecaster, Plant a bit rough voiced and totally dressed in black, Jones and Bonham focused on laying down the groove and as a bonus 2 violin bow/guitar interludes.

The first show of the so called San Francisco tapes. The setlist is a bit strange at first sight, but not stranger than the 26th or 27th. Compared with these 2 dates this is probably (a part of) the second set they played that evening. There are beautiful stories on both Fillmores in Proximity.

The drums and bass are at the front in the mix, the guitar is behind and Plant is above. What a wonderful sounding tape, especially the drums and bass. A quick soundcheck is performed and then it's off with a long intro to 'As Long As I Have You'. Superb version with Bonham in control of the machinery. Plant is hitting the high notes right from the start. As the fast part start you can almost predict that something has to go wrong and indeed there is a problem with Jones' equipment. Maybe he was playing to forceful ? It sounds like a motorbike or a very low Theramin sound. Robert is the saving angel, he keeps on improvising and even including the equipment problems in the lyrics.

Plant and Bonham are starting a jam with Page joining quite late. Page and Bonham perform a little call/response part, while you can hear Jones soundchecking and join the festivities in parts. The end is equally impressive.
One of the best versions of this song.

Bonham is again master of ceremonies during the intro to 'Killing Floor', just hear him do those fills. The fast part with the incredible fluent guitar solo has Jones in light speed mood. 'Squeeze my citrus fruit' lyrics are included.
Then to the final climax. The audience is a bit stunned after this attack.

The introduction to 'White Summer' contains a cut. Jones is also playing along during the first part. Again, wonderful version, very peaceful played. 'Babe I'm Gonna Leave You' is next and again well executed. The drum solo is last on the list, but not the least. Due to the wonderful recording of especially the drums this one is very enjoyable.

This concert is my (and a few other people) favourite from 1969. Plant's incredible voice,propably the first use of the Theramin and the live debut (as far as we know) of 'Whole Lotta Love'.'As Long As I Have You' must be the ultimate version.

I often wonder what time lay between the 2 sets because they always start the second set a bit laidback. Echo is the keyword here and it's creating a kind of 'in space' effect.

Almost the good artwork. This is a classic. Jimmy used some tracks on the BBC sessions and the Remasters box set, so even he likes it. The interview is priceless, with lots of insights on the 'more difficult' music back then.

At the end of 'Dazed & Confused' Jimmy destroys his wah-wah pedal. This version of 'White Summer/Black Mountain Side' is the best ever. Sometimes it seems like there are playing 2 people instead of the maestro himself. Bean me up to Wales, Amsterdam sucks !!!

This is one of the most wonderful sounding board tapes. It's so clear you can hear security (?) people talk which is picked up by equipment on stage. There are some riffs in 'How Many More Times' which seems to signaling the beginning of 'Whole Lotta Love'.

There seems to be limited time for Led Zeppelin' show but they extend 'How Many More Times' to 21 minutes. I played this version on one of my vinyl evenings (a gathering of friends 2 times a year on which we play only vinyl, drink lots of beer and behave like 13 years old) and scored very high marks !
