The bootleg that led to the first official Led Zeppelin live release since 'The Song Remains The Same'. Not the whole show was used by Jimmy so we still need the bootleg to get the complete picture.

Is the official release a bit pointless then ? No, because the bootlegs never reach the sound quality of the official one and it's quite nice to experience the vision of one of the original musicians. It would have been nice if a collectors version was released with the whole show through a website or something. Good show in near perfect quality.

Robert is a bit hoarse in the beginning but recovers fairly well.

Testing time ! Six tracks that nobody present had heard around that time. Almost the complete 4th album, minus 'Battle Of Evermore' and 'When The Levee Breaks'. Other experiments include 'Gallows Pole' and 'Celebration Day' inside 'Communication Breakdown'.

Very good audience recording with Plant upfront and in very clear, high voice as evident in 'Immigrant Song'. Page is the next in the sound picture, with the rest a bit buried. They're playing with extreme confidence right from the start. The return from the guitar solo with band in 'Heartbreaker' is a bit shaky.

There are troubles at the front after 'Heartbreaker'. This is were the photo on the cover from the EV version is from. 'Since I've Been loving You' is a far cry from the bone melting versions from 1973, this is very delicate with subtle organ playing and Plant hitting those microphone destroying notes. After this song everything gets a bit more relaxed.

Somebody gets very excited by the 'Dazed & Confused' bass intro. Very good performance, the bow part is recieved with lots of clapping and whistling. The fast part after the bow solo and the Page/Plant call and response part is very intense. As soon as the group slows down, there's that mildy irritating clapping again.

Next is 'Black Dog' and again the playing is very inspiring. Robert is very anxious to introduce 'Stairway To Heaven'. The solo in these early versions is a bit flat. Robert has no trouble in reaching all the notes in the last part. 'Stairway' gets a standing ovation. Robert tells the crowd several times during the acoustic set that they should be quiet. He gets a bit confused over the setlist.

Needless to say that 'Four Sticks' starts on disc 1 and gets a very rude fade (on the EV version). After a false start a unique version of this song is performed. 'Gallows Pole' is next and is a bit different than the album version. Bonzo accents certain quiet parts in the beginning with heavy drumming.

The medley in 'Whole Lotta Love' is outstanding, with al the usual snippets for this period. The taper' microphone just tolerates Robert' last 'Love'. Finally the audience has a reason to clap because the group is leaving the stage, but quickly returns for the encores. 'Communication Breakdown' follows with great bass playing and a incredible guitar solo.

The 'Celebration Day' part sounds a bit out of place here. 'Misty Mountain Hop' just goes right, Robert sings some parts a bit monotone, but at a show like this they were in for anything i guess. The final song delivers the final blow for the lucky audience. Great show with lots of first timers and blessed with a very good recording.

This beautiful and very exciting find starts with a quick soundcheck and Robert greeting the audience. 'Immigrant Song' starts incredibly fast and furious with Robert screaming his lungs out ! And we only have just begun ! He hits every note perfectly. Jimmy hits the solo perfectly and returns heavier then ever for the main riff.

Bonzo is in great mood, hammering everything perfectly in 'Heartbreaker'. The tape sounds wonderful now with only slight hiss. Again spectacular, after the return from Page's great unaccompanied solo they're faster than ever.

When Robert speaks he mentions Milan and the hiss increases a lot for some reason, was the taper moving closer to the speakers ? Robert goes on hitting impossible notes during 'Since I've Been Loving You'. Only 3 songs into the concert and can it get any better ?

Robert rather claims prematurely that the album is gonna come out in 4 weeks, or so he hopes ! And again, all the notes are there in 'Black Dog'. Hard to imagine people were standing outside listening to this. 'Dazed & Confused' is next on the program. Quite quickly whe're in the bow solo, somewhat ecstaticly recieved by the audience. And after the Page/Plant dialogue the train gets under steam again with the funky riffs.

Another game who gets the highest between Page and Plant and then Page starts riffing. Plants then gets in a song which i can't indentify. After there's a little pause before the pace starts up again. The return to the main riff goes extremely well.

Then follows another premier for the priviliged crowd. A little warming up for the organ and the double neck and of we go. Robert's voice sounds very echoey now, but very beautiful. Robert messes the lyrics up as usual during this period, but who cares. When Jimmy starts the solo there's a little hicup from the tape. And to make it even more perfect Robert agains gives his all in the rock part.

Part 2 to follow shortly....

Very early in the tour for them perform here, usually it's scheduled at the end. The first night is sonic perfection, performance wise.

Robert' voice is in great shape, although he suffers on the second night. The sound is a bit distant, with the bass and drums slightly louder in the mix. The guitar and vocals seems to float above the this all.

Jimmy means business right from the start with a great solo in 'The Immigrant Song'.Bonzo is the star in 'Heartbreaker', although Jimmy' solo spot is also great.

The recording starts in the middle of the bow solo in 'Dazed & Confused'. Very good audience recording with some audience noise. The crowd react immediately to the echo effects during the solo. An interview with the taper in Proximity has very detailed information on the recording of this show. The taper had only one casette tape with him and recorded the last part over the first part of the show.

The bow solo is greatly extended. When the group enters after this the recording stills sound good with Jimmy upfront. The sound is a bit distant but nothing too serious. One girl gets very excited when Robert does his solo bit. The fast parts are greatly extended with great 'waltz' like bass playing by John Paul Jones. Plant joines the party after the wah wah part.

Plant announces 'Black Dog' but 'Stairway To Heaven' is played or was it left out by the taper ? The sound is much closer from the stage suddenly with no echo or reverb at all. The audience is very quiet now, must be the usual reaction towards an unknown song. They had to wait untill 1973 to hear this song again in this venue, it was a bit more popular around that time. Bonzo' drumming sounds a bit strange. The solo isn't so developed as in years to come, but sounds very good here. After the L.A. onslaught Robert hits almost all the notes in the end.

A polite ovation follows. After Jonesy gets his bass 'Celebration Day' is next. Even this usual overload fest sounds very dry. There's a little hesitation before Jimmy starts the first solo. Only one song survives from the acoustic set. Here the sound is perfect with all the details in the guitar/mandolin fully exposed.

A very relaxed 'What Is And What Should Never Be' follows. Perfect version with as an added bonus the now near perfect sound, only the bass guitar is lost in the mix. Page is a bit below the vocals and you can clearly hear him riffing. 'Moby Dick' is next and is fine, nothing special. It is cut at the end.

'Whole Lotta Love' starts with that special 1971 jam. The vocals are just audible in some parts. The theremin goes from high to low and back again. The medley contains the normal songs for this period. Jimmy' soloing on all the songs is great especially on the last two. Clive Coulson gets his first mentioning (see next night).

After this song the taper located to backstage and back to seats much further from the stage as evident in 'Communication Breakdown'. During this song he suddenly realised that he was taping over the begin part and stopped.

* part SB,part audience ** only audience

We start with the audience tape for the announcer, a cut, more audience tape and than the SB. There's a little jam as a kind of soundcheck, a count in from Bonzo and off with the 'Immigrant Song'. The soundboard has lots of bass and lowend, very much like the Hampton Roads tape a few days later.

Robert starts a bit lazy and low but loses up quickly. The guitar is not pushed away by all the bass and low frequenties. The drums are a bit buried in the sound, but Bonzo is there for sure. The crowd sounds very close by, not somewhere on Mars like some other soundboards. The solo spot in Heartbreaker is performed with all the usual attachments, not entirely smooth, but very nice.

The keyboards warming up rumble even more than the bass in the first two songs. Robert' voice in not in top shape, he loses control a few times in 'Since I've Been Loving You'. Great solo from Page here. Page is in a playful mood, he constantly plays bits and pieces between songs.

Then 'Dazed & Confused' instead of 'Black Dog', the usual song during this tour. Plant goes 'very high' in the second verse. The first switch to the audience tape happens after the '25 hours a day' bit, switching back to the SB just before the bow solo. A very thiny bit of 'Bouree' is played during the bowing part. From here to the return of the main theme is very enjoyable, one of the better versions from 1971. Page wah-wah part with Bonzo's syncopated drums during the end is great. There's a tiny bit of 'White Summer' played.

Even when Robert speaks there's echo on his voice. 'Black Dog' follows, with Plant making up words on the spot as it seems. They manage to perform this song, but just !! Page saves it in the end with an excellent solo. Before 'Stairway To Heaven' Bonzo says something about (not playing ?)'Moby Dick'.

'Stairway' is very impressive, with Robert getting the lyrics right. The solo is still under construction i believe, because the playing is a bit flat. The audience likes the 'new' song a lot. 'Celebration Day' is also played on the double neck, because it follows in seconds. 'Celebration Day' is almost complete from the audience source, which sounds good, with also lots of bass. The instrumental ending is quite a mess.

Empress Valley make their usual fault with the end of disc I, with the introduction of the acoustic set, which starts on disc II. The acoustic set is totally from the audience source, with the tape recorder getting messed up with the minute with lots of clicks, bumps and cuts. Normal 1971 versions of the acoustic songs, nothing special.

Rey mentions 'Tangerine' in his book, but this song wasn't played during the American tour of 1971. 'What Is...' is part audience and during the guitar solo it switches back to the soundboard. Robert is need of contact and manage hardly according to himself. 'Moby Dick' lasts about 16 minutes.

'Whole Lotta Love' begins with a jam while Robert still looks for contact. Page is singing his ass off during the choruses. The Theremin comes through loud and clearly. Before returning to the chorus there's a complete stop, before Bonzo counts in again. Robert found contact last night according to the intro to 'Boogie Chillun'. Then someone is invading the stage i think, because Clive Coulson (a roadie) is called. 'Boogie Chillun' continues with a perfect solo from Scotty Page, greatly extended. 'My Baby Left Me' and 'Mess Around With You' (?) follow. 'Mess O'Blues' is next on the bill. And then there's a wonderful beginning and some lyrics that i can't match with a song and suddenly there's a cut and we're into the organ solo. Shame !

The organ solo sounds like an introduction to a religious TV show. 'Thank You' is dominated by the organ. Jimmy's solo is just coming through, but it is a very good one. Bonzo is also hammering away quite nicely. The ending is very mysterious. As a separate track number we get a bonus, an announcement that William' (the stage invader ?) wallet is up here. Well, it's not 'Flying Circus', but it's a lot better than most of those sterile 1973 soundboards.

This tour (and in Japan also) could be called 'Let's get on stage before the audience does'. Maybe it's their own fault for playing so incredibly well on this tour. 1971 must be my favourite year. Can we get the rest of this show soon or maybe the next soundboard that will be released can be this show ?

This is one of the all time classics. Shame the whole concert is not available but some paranoid bootlegger (as the story goes) dumped the tapes in the ocean. The copies that are released on CD are all sourced from vinyl.

Robert claims he lost his voice, but there's no real evidence for this. He sounds a little strange on some of the Viking screams in 'The Immigrant Song' but they rest of his performance has the 1971 'seal of high quality'.
