In a perfect world this show should have a near complete soundboard instead of the previous nght. However, we wouldn't have that always special audience tape atmosphere. Wonderful show, one of the best from 1977.

Finally a new review, just for this new show a few hours no DVD/HTWWW. This tape sounds a lot like 'Destroyer', not mixed and raw but this one has a little bit more of the rhythm section, both the bass and drums come through very good. The guitar is pushed away to the background, but not very far. Plant floats above this all.

The tape starts with the audience and Bonzo doing a little soundcheck. 'The Song Remains The Same' is a bit sluggish. Plant is in good voice and the other 3 are also playing well. The beginning of 'The Rover/Sick Again' is dominated by the bass guitar. By the end of the song everybody is warmed up. Jimmy is playing in his 1977 special 'high tone' during the last parts before the 'ahahah's'.

After Robert's excuses for being late due to the New York traffic the show continues. Robert reaches all the notes of 'Nobody's Fault But Mine'. Where does he get the harmonica so fast, is it hidden in his jeans ? He's plays very impressive on it, like always. Very good version of this classic.

At the beginning of 'In My Time Of Dying' Plant uses his high singing voice at the end of some lines a bit too much, but just tolerable. The drums sound a bit thin, you just wish for the same thunderous sound on some audience and the studio recording(s). After Robert' 'shoot' the jam starts and it's a good one, especially Bonzo filling every hole left by Page/Jones. Robert seems to be calling out for a camel, instead of 'Come On', too much harmonizers/effects on his voice ? 'You Shook Me' is the perfect ending to a good version.

Page and Bonham interrupt Robert explaining the origin of 'In My Time Of Dying'. Since 'Since I've Been Loving You' is my favourite song from HTWWW i'll shut up and give no comment on this version (it's good but no shadow of the 1970/1971/1972 versions). Jimmy is almost absent and is satisfied just adding little licks and bits to Jonesy' piano spiel.

The beginning of 'No Quarter' has a lot of static. At the beginning of the piano solo there's a switch to the audience tape but only for a short time. Bonzo enters Jonesy' solo with Page joining shortly. The guitar sounds very far away here. Jones plays piano they way i type (at least here), with two fingers ( but we both get the job done !). After Jones' outburst Jimmy takes over with a very mellow solo. Bonzo keeps shouting, as he did before during this show. The jam floats along and is very good. A little solo from Jones again and we're back on track with the 'No Quarter' riff.

Again, the beginning of 'Ten Years Gone' starts on disc I, but is hastly faded down. This song always sounds so good on SB's, full and very orchestral. Extremely good version, with minor feedback at the end, where Page suddenly realises he has to play another solo part. Strumming, tuning, shouting and Robert introduces the acoustic set (he's lying about the years they didn't perform it !).

Some firecrakers and Lou Reed's dad are the perfect introduction to "The Battle Of Evermore'. Good version, but this song really needs an audience recording ('LTTE'!). The effects on the vocals sound terrible, Plant seems to be impersonating a cat. 'Going To California' is sounding good, but is (again) a bit overpowered by Robert, but concentrating on John Paul/Jimmy on the mandolin and guitar is a delight.

Jimmy decides on playing 'Dancing Days' and it's not a bad decision, finally a change during the acoustic set. It's very short and leads directly into the next song. During the 'Stomp' we change to the audience recording and a change in atmosphere ! Can EV also release their audience tape, it's supposed to be better than all the previous ones. The part after Jimmy' solo is a bit of a mess.

'White Summer/Black Mountain Side' is next and is good for this period. 'Kashmir' isn't my favourite song on a SB, except for the 'Flying Circus' version. 'Moby Dick' is endless this evening, 35 minutes more or less so there must have been some nice ladies backstage. Again the audience source is used (for some period) during this piece.

Page gets almost direct into the 'Star Spangled Banner' during the guitar experiment. Everything is performed tonight like echo bow slapping, 'Mars, The Bringer Of War' etc. Then Bonzo tries another beginning of 'Achilles Last Stand' during the intro. During the solo Page is very out of tune in some parts. The end is very messy.

'Stairway To Heaven' is next and is very good tonight. The solo has those typical 1977 start/stop sections. I think they planned on playing ' Communication Breakdown' during the encores, but maybe this is just teasing (they do this often in 1977). Page sings the choruses with all power and before we notice we are into the last song. Somebody is playing spoons or something on 'Rock And Roll'.

As a special encore we switch to the audience source after this to hear some comments of the taper and his friends.

Damn rain ! Check your tickets before you print them ! This could have been a spectacular good show, if everything was arranged properly. I think this is the gig that shows that everything was getting a bit out of hand for the organisation behind Led Zeppelin resulting in the Oakland incident.
